Ewing Klipspringer, the 'boarder,' haunts Gatsby's mansion as a perpetual guest, playing piano and lounging through endless parties without a care until Gatsby's death prompts a frightened phone call inquiring only about his lost tennis shoes. He embodies the parasitic leisure class that flocks to new money, vanishing when the glamour fades. His slight embarrassment and nebulous trousers capture the era's hollow hangers-on.

Description

A slightly embarrassed slightly worn young man with shell-rimmed glasses and scanty blond hair. Decently clothed in a sport shirt open at the neck, sneakers, and duck trousers of nebulous hue; occasionally dishevelled in pyjamas.
