Merry, a round-faced kitchen girl slightly older than Fitz, befriends him in the castle's underbelly, offering camaraderie amid his isolation. Her warmth provides fleeting normalcy, but Galen's cruel quirt leaves her scarred, a stark reminder of the dangers lurking for the lowborn. Though minor, her brief arc mirrors the casual brutality shaping Fitz's world.
