Mantaurs are unsettling multi-limbed humanoids of the World Dungeon, first encountered in Book 3 as level 40 neighborhood bosses whose four arms, single pair of legs, Wolverine-style metallic claws, and blue face paint made them a memorable threat. By Book 8 the species is portrayed in fuller detail, showing that mantaurs are sexually dimorphic dual-torsoed beings: the four-armed form Carl first met is the male, while females walk on four legs with arched backs. The evolution of their depiction mirrors the series' habit of revealing that dungeon monsters belong to broader, stranger ecologies than their first appearances suggest.
