Clockwork Mongo is a mechanical replica of Carl and Donut's beloved velociraptor companion, Mongo, built from gears, springs, and a vicious chomping mechanism. It first appears in the third book as a defensive construct, a clockwork guardian whose snapping jaws echo the real dinosaur's ferocity. By the eighth book it returns as a near-perfect duplicate of Mongo, identical in appearance but betrayed by its clockwork innards. The double plays on the crawlers' attachment to their pet and blurs the line between companion and machine.
