Lightning Lou is an elderly bloodhound preserved as a memory ghost, forever asleep in his bed at a Florida gas station beneath a sign bearing his name. First discovered by Carl on a strange Christmas morning in The Eye of the Bedlam Bride, the abandoned old dog stirs Carl's sympathy, prompting a gentle attempt to pet him and a quiet holiday greeting. In This Inevitable Ruin, Lou becomes a small sanctuary of calm: Carl returns to sit beside the softly snoring ghost and bid him farewell before plunging back into the dungeon, the dog's oblivious peace standing in stark contrast to the brutality of the crawl.

Description

Lightning Lou is an elderly bloodhound, found sleeping on his side in a bed. A collar is his distinctive accessory, notable for the jingle it makes when it falls off. No fur color, markings, size, or other physical details are specified; his overall impression is one of peaceful, well-worn rest. Lightning Lou is an old dog, most often imagined resting at the gas station, asleep or barely stirring. The text describes his soft snoring and occasional shifts but gives no breed, coat color, size, or distinguishing markings. His untroubled, drowsy presence is his defining visual impression.
