Barry, born Bartholomew Eli McGibbons, is the late husband of Elle McGibbons, Carl's elderly neighbor turned fellow crawler. He never appears in the dungeon himself and exists only through Elle's memories, first as a brief mention of her deceased spouse and later through fond carnival anecdotes, such as his habit of puking cotton candy after riding the tilt-a-whirl. By Book 8 he becomes a tender, fully realized memory: neither the smartest nor the most handsome man, but Elle's beloved husband of forty-three years, honored when his favorite song, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?", is played in his memory.
