The father is recalled by his son as an ordinary Soviet man who never achieved much in life. After dying of a heart attack, he lies in his coffin with a waxen, tense face that seems strangely unfamiliar to his son. The brief account centers on that painful distance between the person remembered and the still figure before him.
Description
He is described as an ordinary Soviet man, with no specific details given about his height, build, coloring, hair, eyes, or clothing. In the coffin, his face appears waxen, tense, and strangely unfamiliar. That stark change in expression is the only distinctive visual detail preserved in the account.
