Василий Петрович, the building caretaker known as the дворник, appears across multiple chapters as a thin, grim-faced man whose sparse hair and perpetually rumpled clothing reflect his working-class existence. His recognition by voice rather than appearance suggests someone whose presence is felt more than seen.
Description
Thin, sullen middle-aged man with sparse hair, wearing a shirt with crumpled collar and loosened necktie. Frequently smooths his thin hair with his palm, his appearance marked by the practical dishevelment of night duty and physical work.
