Ivan Tovstukha appears as Stalin's assistant across two chapters, first seen at his large secretary desk showing signs of tuberculosis, then later displaying nervousness when confronted. His physical decline from the disease contrasts with his important position, creating tension between his bodily weakness and his official authority.
Description
A thin man whose stooped posture reflects both his tuberculosis and the weight of his position. His pale complexion and frequent coughing mark him as someone whose health is visibly deteriorating. He wears typical Soviet official attire appropriate to his role as Stalin's assistant. His movements carry a nervous quality, and he tends to look from under his brows when observing others.
